In the Spotlight: Alex Pignone

Updated: Feb 17, 2020

All the way from the small town of Liguria in the province of Genoa, Italy, Alex Pignone is the only racer in history to race all circuits from motocross and SBK to Indy and NASCAR.

He started in motorbike racing at the age of 13. He competed in the Motocross Cadet 125 Provincial Championship on a KTM in the Bisiomotor team.

From there he went onto Regional and Interregional Championships with Suzuki and Honda with the News Motor and Marshald teams.

Pignone became the youngest driver at age 16 to race in a national championship and in the motocross 500 CC leading category. In the following year he placed P8 in the Continental Trophy.

Soon after this, Alex Pignone was involved in a serious accident forcing him to give up what he loved to do. Hardheaded and dedicated like many athletes, Alex went against doctors orders and looked on to the Italian Sport Production Championship race.

Following this race he spent time in recovery for a hand injury. Once he recovered he took a 4th place finish in the very next race.

He met expert trainer in Motorbike Gran Prix, Enzo Mancin, in 1989 and began to learn about the 'Seniors of the Italian 250 GP'. After improvements here he went a step forward with a different team.

In 1991, Pignone got the opportunity to compete in the European Championship but had another accident. He went through lots of physiotherapy and treatment and before he knew it he was back to racing.

Alex returned to the Superbike Championship but the Ducati he was racing caught on fire.

A friendship began on this day between Alex Pignone and racer Luigi Pezzoni. Pignone competed in the Superbike and Open Championships from 1993 to 1999.

In 2001, he decided it was time to go further in his racing career so after receiving some advice he was on his way to the United States.

Alex attended qualifying for the National USA Superbike at Daytona International Speedway. Although he didn't have money like others, his pride, desperation, and willingness to come this far pushed him to have the 16th fastest time.

Soon he made the decision to move to a different type of racing. This style of racing had four wheels. In October 2007, practiced with the Indy Pro Series at Kentucky Motor Speedway.

After talking with friends and mentors of Alex Pignone it is obvious that he is a focused, deserving, and great guy who is ready to get back to the U.S. and race. He has a genuine passion for racing and a willingness to do just about anything to go back to what he loves to do.
